POM has a limit oxygen index of only 15%, which is a veryflammable plastic variety. As engineering plastics, POM is widelyused in automobile, electronics, electrical and building materials,which require high flame retardancy of materials. Due to the poorcompatibility of POM with other materials, it is difficult toprepare flame retardant POM with excellent properties by addingflame retardant directly. Asahikawa Industrial Co., Ltd. of Japanhas applied for a patent for a flame retardant polyformaldehydesuper-extender. The flame retardant polyformaldehydesuperelongation is prepared by coating vinylidene chloride polymerlatex on the superelongated polyformaldehyde or by mixing the latexwith metal oxides or hydroxides. 0.2-0.5 g per gram ofpolyformaldehyde was coated to obtain a continuous film with oxygenindex greater than 40 and flow temperature greater than 100 C.
